Bank of Mauritius governor calls cross-border payments essential for Africa’s resilience and economic transformation
- Dr Priscilla Muthoora Thakoor, Governor of the Bank of Mauritius, gave opening remarks at a workshop on cross-border payments held in Port Louis on 15 July 2026.
- The workshop was organised by the FSB Regional Consultative Group for Sub-Saharan Africa (RCG SSA), with central bank governors and representatives of the IMF and World Bank attending.
- The speech states that payment systems are the invisible infrastructure underpinning trade, investment, entrepreneurship, financial inclusion and economic integration.
- The speech cites GSMA data suggesting Sub-Saharan Africa accounts for approximately 835 million registered mobile money accounts, with mobile money transactions across the continent exceeding US$1.1 trillion.
- The speech states that Africa remains the most expensive region for remittance transfers, with average costs exceeding 8 percent for a USD 200 payment.
- Remittances to sub-Saharan Africa amounted to US$57.2 billion in 2024, according to the speech.
- The speech says the FSB’s 2025 consolidated progress report indicates Sub-Saharan Africa will fall short of the 2027 G20 roadmap targets.
