The Hong Kong Monetary Authority (HKMA) was established on 1 April 1993 following the merger of the Office of the Exchange Fund and the Office of the Commissioner of Banking. Operating under the Exchange Fund Ordinance and the Banking Ordinance, it reports to Hong Kong’s Financial Secretary.

As Hong Kong’s central banking authority, the HKMA is responsible for maintaining monetary and banking stability, safeguarding the Linked Exchange Rate System, strengthening the resilience and integrity of the financial system, developing Hong Kong’s financial infrastructure, and managing the Exchange Fund to support the city’s role as a leading international financial centre.
