IFC explores water infrastructure and renewable energy opportunities in Azerbaijan

  • The International Finance Corporation is exploring opportunities in Azerbaijan for desalination and wastewater treatment projects, where private-sector expertise and financing can complement public investment to address water scarcity constraints.
  • The World Bank Group mobilised around $100 million in private capital in Azerbaijan in fiscal year 2026, as part of a broader effort to mobilise significantly more private capital for development across emerging markets.
  • IFC is prepared to support Azerbaijan’s renewable energy sector, which has an estimated 157 gigawatts of offshore wind capacity and 23 gigawatts of solar potential, positioning the country as a credible regional energy exporter.
  • The organisation sees investment opportunities in transport, logistics, and digital infrastructure to strengthen Azerbaijan’s role in the Trans-Caspian Transport Corridor, including railcar fleet renewal and warehousing centres.
  • IFC is working to broaden financial access for small businesses in Azerbaijan through partnerships with local banks and supporting development of alternative financing solutions including asset-based finance, factoring, supply chain finance, and leasing.
  • The organization provided a $20 million local currency facility to Bank Respublika, with half earmarked for MSMEs and low-income households, and plans to scale similar initiatives aligned with the country’s diversification needs.
