Copper prices hit record high amid supply challenges and tariff concerns

  • Copper prices on the London Metal Exchange reached a fresh record, with three-month futures rising 0.7% to $14,598.50 per metric ton, marking a nearly 17% increase for 2026.
  • The rally is driven by expectations of sustained strong demand linked to electricity grids, AI infrastructure, data centres, electric vehicles, and the global energy transition.
  • Global copper mine production declined 1.1% in the first half of 2026 due to ageing mines and operational challenges in major producing countries, including Chile, Indonesia, and the Democratic Republic of Congo.
  • Supply tightening is compounded by large volumes of refined copper being sent to the U.S. amid concerns over potential new tariffs, reducing inventories elsewhere.
  • The US Commerce Department is reviewing whether refined copper should face import duties following a 50% tariff on certain semi-finished copper products imposed last year.
  • Analysts suggest copper prices could rise further if they remain above $14,400 per ton, though recent gains may prompt profit-taking, especially if a stronger dollar impacts commodities.
