SEC grants no-action relief confirming Canton Coin as digital commodity
- The US Securities and Exchange Commission staff has granted no-action relief confirming that Canton Coin, the native token of Canton’s public blockchain for institutional finance, is a digital commodity and not a security.
- The relief covers the minting of Canton Coin by network participants, including Super Validators, Validators, and application providers, without requiring registration under the Securities Act or Exchange Act.
- This is the first no-action relief granted by SEC staff since the Commission’s March 2026 Interpretive Release on crypto assets and its August 2026 Regulation Crypto Assets proposal.
- Central to the SEC’s assessment were two characteristics: the network operates without central control over participation or reward distribution, and it was already functional when Canton Coin launched.
- Canton Coin was introduced without an initial coin offering or pre-mine sale, with tokens initially earned exclusively through contributions to operating network infrastructure and applications.
- Canton connects financial institutions and applications for securities, collateral, payments, derivatives, treasury management, and digital cash whilst preserving privacy and regulatory controls.
