India’s central bank attracts $143.6 billion under forex swap facility
- As of September 18, India’s central bank has attracted $143.6 billion in inflows under its forex swap facility, according to data released on September 21.
- The Reserve Bank of India introduced measures in June, including concessional hedging facilities and swap arrangements to support the rupee, which had fallen to record lows earlier in the year.
- Foreign currency non-resident (FCNR(B)) deposits accounted for the majority of inflows, totalling $132.98 billion as of August 31, leading to an early closure of the window due to robust demand.
- Overseas Foreign Currency Borrowings contributed $5.32 billion, while External Commercial Borrowings added $5.30 billion under the facility.
- Borrowings raised via ECBs and OFCBs remain eligible under the swap facility until December 31.
- India has historically relied on its diaspora for dollar deposits during currency stress, offering hedging subsidies; a similar scheme in 2013 attracted about $26 billion.
