Good morning from Lisbon
— TTP are on the ground at the FCI 58th Annual Meeting.
Starting the day with a panel on how multilateral development banks help grow the global factoring network.
The oft cited trade finance gap still stands at $2.5 trillion. That’s the size of the collective opportunity.
Open account trade is the growth opportunity for global trade: factoring, receivables finance, reverse factoring, and invoice discounting.
The biggest barriers to adoption of these instruments in emerging markets lie around legal uncertainty, weak assignment frameworks, limited connectivity to global networks, and a persistent KYC burden that makes cross-border transactions slow and expensive.
Digitalisation is the precondition for everything else. Paper causes friction, enables fraud, and prevents transparency. Moving from paper to data is what unlocks financing all the way down the supply chain.
The concept of “atomic payments” — small pieces of financing delivered at each point a transaction becomes financeable, rather than waiting until goods reach the end buyer — is closer to reality than most people think.
In this discussion, MDBs stated that they aren’t here to compete with the private sector, their job is to provide legal reform, policy frameworks, capacity building, and local currency financing.Moderated by Gustavo Fernandez Batory, Senior Manager, Banco Pichincha / FCI Executive Committee, with panellists:

We’ve landed in Lisbon.
Trade Treasury Payments is proud to be an official media partner at the FCI 58th Annual Meeting, taking place this week at the Sheraton Lisboa Hotel under the theme Designing the Future of Receivables Finance.
It’s a full house — 400-plus members from 90 countries gathered to shape the direction of open account receivables finance, factoring, and supply chain finance for the year ahead.
TTP Studios are already in action. We’ve sat down with Karol Leszczyński from Comarch on what AI adoption actually looks like inside a factoring technology platform. And we’ve interviewed Ignacio Tirado, Secretary-General of UNIDROIT, and Marek Dubovec of the FCI Legal Committee on the just-launched Guide to Enactment of the UNIDROIT Model Law on Factoring — what it means for MSMEs, developing markets, and the FCI network.
We also heard remarks from FCI Chair Chenyue Mao and Deputy Secretary General Betül Kurtulus ahead of this morning’s opening session.
More interviews, more coverage, and more insight to follow throughout the week.
Stay tuned.
