Live Updates
Belgium has been experiencing a widespread outage affecting the Bancontact payment network, a critical infrastructure for electronic transactions across the country, since this morning. The disruption, which lasted from 6:00 to 9:50 AM, caused significant inconvenience to consumers and businesses that rely on Bancontact terminals for everyday payments.
Cause and resolution of the outage
The CEO of Bancontact confirmed to DHnet that the root cause of the outage lied with their subcontractor, Worldline. Worldline acknowledged experiencing technical difficulties limited to Belgium. Importantly, the company ruled out cyberattack as the cause of the disruption, attributing it to a technical fault.
Impact on consumers and businesses
Bancontact Payconiq Company reported that some cardholders experienced difficulties paying in stores, vending machines, and gas stations due to the incident. However, the issue has now been resolved, and all Bancontact payments on Worldline terminals are running normally again.
The company expressed regret for the inconvenience caused to users and merchants, highlighting that the outage was beyond their control.
This incident highlights the vulnerability of digital payment systems and the ripple effects such outages can have on a nation’s financial and communication networks.
