Circle launches Bitcoin-backed borrowing service for institutional clients
- Circle has launched Digital Asset-Backed Borrowing, a service allowing institutional clients to use Bitcoin as collateral to borrow USDC through onchain lending markets.
- The service lets eligible Circle Mint customers deposit Bitcoin, mint Circle’s wrapped Bitcoin token cirBTC, and supply it as collateral to supported third-party lending markets on Arc or Ethereum.
- Morpho is the first lending protocol supported, with Circle planning to add Aave and other protocols in the future.
- Borrowed USDC is deposited directly into the customer’s Circle Mint balance, with borrowing rates, collateral requirements and liquidation thresholds set by third-party lending markets rather than Circle.
- The launch coincides with broader institutional crypto lending expansion, including Anchorage Digital’s partnership with Kamino for borrowing against staked Solana and Lombard’s collaboration with Bitwise for Bitcoin-backed lending.
- BitGo also launched a financing platform in March for borrowing and lending against liquid, staked and locked crypto assets held in custody, using a portfolio-based collateral model.
