Africa Finance Corporation launches US$1 billion trade finance program with Munich Re
- Africa Finance Corporation announced a US$1 billion Unfunded Managed Debt Mobilisation Programme with Munich Re, providing committed risk-sharing support for AFC’s trade finance lending to African financial institutions.
- The programme replaces transaction-by-transaction risk sharing with pre-agreed risk parameters, enabling eligible trade finance transactions to be covered automatically with faster decision-making for banks.
- The first phase covers commercial letters of credit, trade loans and trade guarantees for 38 financial institutions across 11 African countries, with plans to review the programme’s scope for additional instruments and sectors over time.
- As short-dated transactions mature, the programme’s capacity is freed up and reused to finance new investments, creating a recycling mechanism for ongoing trade finance.
- The programme builds on a partnership that began in 2018 and anchors AFC’s broader Managed Debt Mobilisation Program platform, through which other investors can participate by providing funding or sharing risk.
- The initiative follows AFC’s establishment of AFC Captive Insurance Company in August 2026, a Bermuda-based subsidiary backed by up to US$30 million in equity capital, reflecting AFC’s strategy to use insurance and risk-sharing to extend its financing capacity.
