International Group of P&I Clubs
The International Group of P&I Clubs (the IG) is an unincorporated association of 12 principal underwriting Protection and Indemnity (P&I) associations and their affiliated associations. It provides a forum for its members to coordinate the operation and regulation of the claim-sharing agreement known as the Pooling Agreement, through which qualifying claims exceeding US$10 million are shared among the clubs. The IG also facilitates a market reinsurance programme and acts as a collective voice for the industry on international legislation and conventions affecting shipowners’ liabilities.
Through its member clubs, the IG provides liability insurance cover for approximately 87% of the world’s ocean-going tonnage. These clubs are independent, non-profit mutual insurance associations that offer cover for third-party liabilities, such as cargo loss, pollution, wreck removal, and personal injury. The IG maintains its workforce in the United Kingdom, Indonesia, Norway, and the Philippines.
